to our first-graders: you are free to fly

confession: i love when i get to create + paint + design with kids. no joke, it is just so much darn fun. to see their excitement, to answer their questions, to see their faces when their hands get a little messy. ahhhh....and a couple of weeks ago, when our family was in the countdown to my sissy's wedding, i got to take a few minutes, and go in to little mr. re-nest #1's classroom and create with adorable, inquisitive, polite little ones. #bestday

and, no, it wasn't to become their new art teacher! every year, our school has a casino night fundraiser, where each class in pre-school through eighth grade makes something....art, a picture, a collage, something, which is part of the silent auction portion of the evening. guess who raised their hand to help with first grade? (in case you're not yet following, that would be me.)

we needed something simple, and easy for the kiddos to do. i started getting some inspiration on pinterest. after looking through a ton of ideas, i kept coming back to the idea of a butterfly. the symbolism of the butterfly + our sweet first graders....that each day, they are growing and blossoming and becoming more of who they are going to be....kind of like a butterfly does. and, then i found the most perfect quote that clinched the whole butterfly idea..."you are free to fly."

i decided on a 12" x 12" canvas, and a large butterfly die-cut out of white paper. but i needed to figure out how the kids could put their personal touch on it. thumbprints seemed perfect. and, we could be really colorful with them, and we could also mark their names on their thumbprint. my day at school came and the kids loved doing their thumbprints and making out butterfly into a beautiful little creature.

little mr. re-nest #1 chimed in with the idea to paint the background of the canvas a bright yellow, and the rest was kinda history. i so loved this piece, and i know the home it's going to will love it too. it's just such a great reminder for any of us...that no matter how old we are, spreading our wings to fly is always a necessary in our lives.

a new piece for a newly refreshed home!

okay, so i can't even believe it's been two weeks since the last little update on this blog o'mine....it's been cray cray around here. let's just say that i've been celebrating the best kind of love with my sissy's wedding, matroning-of-honoring (that is riddled with grammatical issues, i know!), and getting all sorts of stuff ready for a very special fundraiser at little mr. re-nest #1's school this weekend. but i have a quick few minutes to share with you what has been going on in the studio, and a fancy new design i just finished!

y'all remember i was at the sycamore pumpkin fest a couple of weeks ago....well, i had a lovely woman come in to my booth and start chatting with me about my home canvas (one of my faves!) she told me that she had just finished refreshing her home with new paint + some new furniture, but she needed some pieces for her walls! she loved the home piece, but she wanted something a little more personalized....so right then and there, we designed it.

we went with a 12" x 24" canvas (which is surprisingly quickly becoming one of my fave canvases to design to these days....), a background in charcoal grey, and a simple "the bakers, est. 2005" in layered paper art on the canvas. totally simple + totally lovely! i love that she's planning to hang this over the front door to her home, which just seems like the perfect spot for something so personal.

in fact, i'm so in love with this piece that i think i'm gonna have to add it to the etsy store...i mean, last weekend, i had another prospective client over to look at the home piece, and when she saw the new "the bakers" piece, she ended up ordering both! i think that's a sign, don't you?!?

tell me: what do you think of the new addition to the etsy shop??

sweet special deliveries!

babies, babies, babies! right before the sycamore pumpkin fest show, i had the total honor of getting to design + create two very lovely special delivery canvases for new babies! both were for sweet little girls, so you can imagine how much fun i had getting creative with these!

my first one i had the joy of creating was for a dear, dear friend of mine, who had an adorable little girl this spring! being a great friend, i was able to get a peek at this sweet girl's bedding + nursery colors....and when i started sketching, i knew i have the most perfect patterned paper that had to be added to his piece! (note: if you know anyone who spends a lot of time in michaels or hobby lobby and is one of those people who hoards crafty supplies, that's me. i find papers that are cool + cute, and i buy them....knowing someday i'll use it. well, never make fun friends, because this was one of those projects where a piece of paper i'd had for probably two years was finally used!) and, isn't her name just completely divine??

and, the lovely, lovely second one i had the honor of making was for a little girl who was born just a couple of weeks ago! but, her auntie got a hold of me before she was even born, and we had colors, patterns, and theme down....so all we needed to finish the piece was her sweet name, birthday, and stats! this one was so fun with the butterfly theme....i totally got inspired to do something three-dimensional, and with a little texture on the wings! isn't this so fun?!?

i'm always so touched when i am invited to have one of my little pieces adorn a new baby's nursery...i know how much that birth day, and all that goes into it means to a mama + daddy, and to be able to create a meaningful keepsake for those babes is such a big deal to me. i'm just so flattered that i'm invited to be part of something so important.

hope you loved these....and if you know someone with a baby on the way, let me know!
